When Mom refuses to move

It's one of the hardest parts. Here's how families find a way forward without breaking trust.

Understand the no

Refusal is often about fear: losing independence, leaving a home full of memories, or picturing an old-style nursing home. Ask what worries her most and listen to the answer.

Small steps that work

  • Visit a community together for lunch or an event, not a sales tour.
  • Try a short respite stay.
  • Bring in someone she trusts: her doctor, a friend, a clergy member, or an advisor.
  • Add help at home first, and revisit later.

When safety is at stake

If Mom is in danger and can't make safe decisions, talk with her doctor and an elder law attorney about options. In an emergency, call 911.
